Summiting Mt. Baker

Mt. Baker is a 10,778 foot dormant volcano in Washington State. Monica and I did this trip with our outdoor club. I climbed it twice and each time was awesome.

Lots of crevasses and ice bridges to be aware of.

We backpacked up to the Black Buttes at about 8,000 feet and set up camp. We had to use crampons and we were tied together as hidden crevasses could have been anywhere.

We were above the clouds and enjoyed fine sunsets and a view of the distant ocean.

Early next morning we made the ascent along with other climbers.

Rise and shine.

The summit is as big as a football field and rather flat.  You can see the steam and smell the sulfur in the air.   It is a little bit daunting to think that it could erupt at any time.

Time to head down. What a great trip.
